As the founder of Sailhouse (sailhouse.com), which buys older houses in O.C.’s beach neighborhoods and redevelops the into custom homes, Patterson is involved in every step of the way. Here he shares his design philosophy.
Tell me a little bit about Sailhouse. Sailhouse is a residential real estate development company. However, I like to think we are a little more than that. We care deeply about a lot of things- design, location, energy conservation, green design elements, the quality and sustainability of our materials and, most importantly, the people we work with.
You launched Sailhouse in 2009. How many projects have you done since then? Eleven, and we’re working on several new ones.
Any favorites? We rebuilt a midcentury-modern house, originally built in 1954 on Lido Isle- it is one of the first master-planned residential communities in California and incorporates a very prevalent Mediterranean architectural theme. Having a modern house canvas to work with was very rare. We were committed to rebuilding every square inch-interior and exterior-without compromising the original lines.
